In the event of an an active shooter or other imminent danger, the library will implement the following Emergency Action Plan.

 

EVACUATE

If the decision of the person in charge is to evacuate, take the following steps:

  1. Call Emergency Command Center. Let them know we are evacuating.
  2. Notify all persons in the library.
  3. Empty first floor of the library, assisting and directing users to evacuate.
  4. Using back stairwell, access second floor and resume directing users out. Advise users to use stairwells and avoid the elevator.
  5. Check both bathrooms on first and second floor for staff or students.
  6. Help and assist anyone with disabilities.
  7. Do one more check of both floors, and then leave library.
STAY IN PLACE

If the decision of the person in charge is to stay in place, take the following steps:

  1. Call Emergency Command Center.
  2. Lock all library doors.
  3. Turn off all the lights.
  4. Remain calm and find safe hiding place (inside an office).
FIGHT

If a situation arises where there is a need to fight, take the following steps:

  1. Call Emergency Command Center.
  2. Communicate with library users and staff what you plan to do.
  3. Find something to use as a weapon.
  4. Try to contain the individual.

Role of person in charge:

  1. Communicate with Emergency Command Center.
  2. Ultimate decision maker of action to be taken (team captain).
  3. Communicate decision to the Emergency Command Center; if possible, decision should be communicated before any action is taken.
